The claim is well-supported by multiple news sources. The ITV News article (1 June 2026) lists 17 people who died in water-related incidents during the UK heatwave. From the victim list, at least 10–12 of the 17 were under 18, including Junior Slater (12), Reco Puttock (13), an unnamed girl (13), Baltazar L'Qui (14), Declan Sawyer (15), Chiedza Nyanjowa (15), Charlie Noble (16), Lilliana Tomlinson (16), Muhammed Secka (16–17), David Tita Jr (17), and unnamed teenage boys at Hawley Lake and Swanscombe, Kent. The remaining victims were adults (a man in his 60s, a woman in her 60s, a woman aged 72, a man in his 40s, and a 19-year-old man). Multiple sources explicitly confirm the characterization: The Independent stated "the majority of whom were children," BBC reported that the RLSS said "most of which involved children," Wales Online described "the majority of them teenagers," and Loughborough University noted "mostly children and teenagers." Even under a strict reading of "children" as pre-teen, at least 2–3 victims were 12–13 years old. Under common usage (which includes teenagers), the majority of the 17 victims were children. The claim that "many of whom were children" is accurate and well-supported. From speech
I associate myself with your remarks about Lord Alan Haselhurst, Mr Speaker, and can confirm to the Leader of the Opposition that he will be missed across the House. I also associate myself with the Prime Minister’s remarks about Lance Corporal James Freeman, who was killed in Iraq. Our thoughts are with his family and unit. I also offer our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of the 17 people who tragically drowned during the recent heatwave, many of whom were children. The murder of Henry Nowak was an evil crime made much worse by the lies of the killer and the police response. The investigation must uncover everything that went wrong, and all police forces must act on its conclusions. Outside court, Henry’s father made a powerful plea that his son’s murder should not be used to create further division, but should instead be used to treat knife crime as a national emergency. Does the Prime Minister agree that the victims of knife crime and their families deserve a politics where we come together to solve these problems, instead of using them as a political football?
