Tony Blair did indeed claim that "the radical people aren't sensible and the sensible people aren't radical." This exact formulation appears in his essay published by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, titled "The Labour Party Is Playing With Fire Over Its Future and the Future of the Country," as well as in an interview with The News Agents. Multiple sources confirm the quote verbatim: - The Tony Blair Institute website states: "the difficulty (not just in Britain) is that too often the sensible people aren't radical, and the radical people aren't sensible." - The News Agents interview quotes Blair saying: "The difficulty is that too often today, the radical people aren't sensible and sensible people aren't radical." - Chronicle Live and UnHerd also report the same quote. The claim as stated in the speech — that Blair "claims that the sensible people are not radical and the radical people are not sensible" — is an accurate representation of what Blair said. However, it is worth noting that Blair's broader argument was that the solution is a "Radical Centre" that combines both qualities, and he used the observation as a diagnosis of a political problem rather than an endorsement of it as a permanent state of affairs. But the specific factual claim about what Blair said is correct. From speech
I thank the Prime Minister for his reply and completely agree with him. We stand ready to work with the Government on serious policies to tackle knife crime. With our armed forces overstretched, Labour now seems to be investing in a new weapon of war: the long-form essay. It gives another meaning to the phrase “drone warfare”—[Laughter.] Tony Blair says that the UK should suck up to Donald Trump, kowtow to US tech barons and go slow on Europe—the Prime Minister must be grateful for this rare endorsement of his agenda. Blair also claims that the sensible people are not radical and the radical people are not sensible. Is the Prime Minister concerned that unless he changes course, he will be remembered for being neither radical nor sensible?
