The claim is well-supported by multiple independent sources. The Institute of Hospitality published a detailed account confirming that on 2 June 2026, a roundtable was "convened by Rosie Duffield MP in the House of Commons" and that it "brought together leading voices from across the industry, including Sacha Lord FIH, Matt Tebbutt and Thomasina Miers." Kent Online separately reported that "Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield hosted a discussion with restaurateurs, top chefs such as Thomasina Miers and Matt Tebbutt, hospitality industry leaders and fellow MPs, including Herne Bay and Sandwich's Sir Roger Gale, in Westminster earlier this week." The speech was delivered on 3 June 2026, and "yesterday" would refer to 2 June 2026, matching the roundtable date. The only minor discrepancy is the spelling of the chef's surname: the Hansard record and speech transcript say "Thomasina Myers," while the correct name — confirmed by the Institute of Hospitality and Kent Online — is "Thomasina Miers." This is a minor transcription or pronunciation error, not a factual misidentification of a different person. The core assertion — that Duffield and Gale hosted Matt Tebbutt and Thomasina Miers at a hospitality roundtable the day before the speech — is accurate. From speech
Q5. This week, Tom Kerridge and UKHospitality launched their “VAT’s the Problem” campaign, and yesterday my neighbour the right hon. Member for Herne Bay and Sandwich (Sir Roger Gale) and I hosted industry bodies, chefs Matt Tebbutt and Thomasina Myers and hospitality leaders from Manchester, Liverpool, London and Kent, including Andy Burnham’s night-time economy adviser Sacha Lord. They all agree with campaigners such as Andy Lennox that the UK’s rate of 20% VAT on hospitality is killing businesses daily. Does the Prime Minister agree that VAT’s the problem? Will he match the pledge of his candidate in Makerfield to slash VAT in line with the rest of Europe?
