Tickets for soft play are cheaper.

Reasoning & Evidence21 Jul 2026
The claim is substantively supported: the government has announced and confirmed a VAT cut that makes soft play tickets cheaper during summer 2026, and businesses are participating. However, at the time of the speech (3 June 2026), the scheme was not yet in effect (starting 25 June), and the actual price reduction depends on businesses voluntarily passing on the VAT saving rather than being guaranteed by law. The impression that tickets are already cheaper is premature, and the certainty of savings is qualified by the voluntary nature of business pass-through. The government's own fact sheet lists "soft play centres, indoor bounce parks and indoor play facilities" among the qualifying attractions, with an estimated saving of "£2 off entry to soft play" for a family of two adults and two children, if the business passes on the full VAT saving. The government confirmed on 25 June 2026 that independent soft play areas are among the small businesses participating, and the summersavings.gov.uk website lists specific venues such as "Mini Kingdom Soft Play in Yeovil" as offering discounts. Starmer's phrasing — "savings we are delivering for family fun days out this summer" and "cheaper tickets for soft play" — frames this as a policy outcome for the summer period, not necessarily a present-tense reality on 3 June. The policy was announced and confirmed, and businesses had signed up. But the actual price reduction was not yet live, and depends on voluntary business pass-through, as the fact sheet itself notes: "If the business chooses to pass through the full benefit." From speech
The right hon. Gentleman rather spoiled what was quite a good gag. I am surprised he has not done more to welcome the savings we are delivering for family fun days out this summer; I really thought he would have been delighted at the cheaper tickets for soft play.
