The claim concerns whether Nigel Farage's father, Guy Justus Oscar Farage, was "extremely well known in the City" (the City of London financial district). What is confirmed: Multiple sources confirm that Guy Farage was indeed a stockbroker who worked in the City of London. Wikipedia, the BBC, and other outlets establish this basic fact. He worked on the Stock Exchange floor, lost his position around 1969 due to alcohol problems, returned to trading in 1972 after getting sober, and continued working into his 70s. What the evidence says about his reputation: The BBC's 2012 Radio 4 profile described Guy as "something of a bon viveur." Several secondary/derivative sources describe him as a "larger-than-life character," "one of the best-dressed men on the trading floor," a "flamboyant storyteller," and a "well-known figure within the trading community during the 1960s and 1970s." One anecdote recounts him being in a lift with the chairman of the London Stock Exchange, lamenting the Big Bang reforms, which suggests familiarity with senior City figures. The difficulty: The specific characterization "extremely well known in the City" is a subjective claim about someone's level of fame within a specific professional community decades ago. No primary, official, or authoritative source specifically uses language like "extremely well known" to describe Guy Farage's City reputation. The available evidence is consistent with him being a colorful, recognizable character on the trading floor, but it falls short of definitively confirming that he was "extremely well known" — a strong characterization. Conversely, nothing in the available evidence contradicts the claim either; there is no source suggesting he was obscure or unknown. This is fundamentally a claim about private professional reputation from decades past. The evidence needed to definitively verify or contradict the level of fame described — "extremely well known" — is not available in public sources. The derivative sources that do describe him as "well-known" are not themselves authoritative primary sources. Oh yes. In fact, both of my parents are very dynamic people – they get involved, they get stuck in. My father has just retired – quite good to be stockbroking still at the age of 75 – and now he’s very busy being president of his regiment and things like that. He is an extremely colourful character, and certainly in the City was extremely well known. I talk a little bit in the book about some of the problems he had…
