Reasoning & Evidence21 Jul 2026
In the interview turn, "those extreme positions" refers to absolutist libertarian stances such as the view that "all forms of pornography are acceptable." Farage explicitly stated, "I don't support those." Public evidence around the time of the interview (December 2011) indicates that while Farage described himself as a libertarian in a November 2010 Telegraph interview — supporting decriminalization and regulation of prostitution, a Royal Commission on drugs, and opposing the smoking and hunting bans — his positions were not the extreme absolutist ones he was disavowing. He advocated regulation rather than unrestricted acceptance, and by 2013 he publicly stated he had been "a libertarian until I became a father," indicating his views already had limits. When defending a UKIP candidate who worked in adult entertainment (2014–2015), Farage framed it as a matter of private conduct ("What people do in the privacy of their own homes is nothing to do with politics"), not an endorsement that all forms of pornography are acceptable. There is no public evidence that Farage held the extreme absolutist libertarian positions he was disavowing in the interview; his actual positions were more measured. The claim is therefore assessed as true. From article
To some extent. To some extent. Our culture and our upbringing do dictate what we find acceptable within the rules of society. But no, I mean, look, we have some basic animal-protection rules that wouldn’t let you do it. Do I think those rules are unnecessary and should be scrapped? I can’t get drawn down that route! It’s difficult. I mean, listen, there are extreme libertarians who argue that all forms of pornography are acceptable, or – yeah, there are some very extreme positions out there. I don’t support those, but I do think that in this country government is impinging, bit by bit, upon our freedoms – and I think that the smoking ban and the hunting ban are two very good examples. I don’t hunt foxes, but if other people want to, that doesn’t actually impinge on my personal freedom.
