“Much of our infrastructure is foreign-owned.”
Reasoning & Evidence21 Jul 2026
The claim that "much of our infrastructure is foreign-owned" is well-supported by official evidence available at the time of the interview (December 2011). In December 2010, the UK's Office of Fair Trading (OFT) published a comprehensive stock-take of ownership across Britain's economic infrastructure (energy, water, transport, communications). It found that at least 38% of UK infrastructure was owned by foreign firms and investors, with foreign ownership particularly high in airports and waste sectors. Major examples included Spain's Ferrovial owning BAA (Heathrow, Stansted, and other airports), Germany's RWE owning npower, France's EDF owning British Energy, Dubai's DP World owning P&O ports, and Australia's Macquarie owning Thames Water and NCP car parks. The OFT described a trend of ownership becoming "increasingly internationalised." A figure of 38% — over a third — reasonably supports the characterization "much of our infrastructure."

Why are you so focused on the threat from Brussels? You don’t seem to be concerned, for example, that most of our media are foreign-owned – and now much of our infrastructure, too. You don’t seem concerned about the transatlantic threat of homogenisation, either – the extent to which British culture is becoming –
