The evidence provides mixed but generally supportive signals. Professor Joe Herbert of Cambridge, who spent 10 days on an investment bank's trading floor, described trading floors as "man-made jungles" suited to "young men with high testosterone levels who crave high risk activities that require swift decision-making abilities under stressful scenarios." He noted: "As you get older, you lose the ability to think on your feet, and ongoing stress increases the risk of burnout." In his study of 220 traders, he saw only four women and "didn't see one person over 40." Multiple industry sources confirm that trading floors skew very young — at UBS, for instance, most traders were under 30. Burnout is repeatedly cited: one comparison was "Being a trader is like being a footballer – you don't meet many who stay in the job well into their 30s as people tend to burn out." Gary Stevenson's widely reported account of severe burnout at age 27 as a Citibank trader vividly illustrates the pressure-cooker environment.
However, the evidence also complicates the causal claim. The same sources identify multiple other drivers of the young demographic beyond pressure alone: (1) the flat, meritocratic structure of trading floors means few management roles exist for older practitioners to move into; (2) traders who earn enough money choose to retire early ("the older traders make a choice to enjoy the fruits of their labour rather than continuing to work in a very stressful environment"); (3) some experts argue the main issue is not age-related inability to handle pressure but difficulty "unlearning markets" as conditions change. Additionally, a peer-reviewed study of financial professionals found that age did *not* significantly predict job stress — though this study covered financial professionals broadly, not specifically open-outcry market-makers.
The pressure/stress of the role is a credible and frequently cited contributor to the youth-dominated demographics of market-making and trading. But it is one of several factors, and the evidence does not establish it as the sole or decisive cause. The causal link is reasonable and likely, but not decisively proven.

The pressure of being a market-maker in a busy market, when you’ve got people all around you screaming and shouting at you and you’re dealing in numbers and it’s like that, that, that, that – that’s pretty pressurised. That’s why it’s a young man’s job. You don’t get many 50-year-old money-brokers: they can’t do it any more. Goodness me! It’s not an easy job. Not an easy job.
When I joined the City, it was the dying days of a gentlemen’s club: magnificent, socially wonderful but going nowhere – there was still a whiff of P G Wodehouse about people who toddled off to the City all day and did things that nobody understood at all. But what I saw in the Eighties and Nineties was London becoming in many ways a genuine global centre for entrepreneurial flair, for innovation, for very hard work – and for creating profits. And without those profits we can’t have the schools and hospitals we need in this country – it’s very, very simple. I am absolutely not conflicted in any way at all about the fact that what we did, overall, was for a social good.
